The #1 thing that is super duper critical to content marketing is knowing what the goal of your content is.

See, the difference between just publishing content and content marketing is your goal behind it. Publishing content helps nurture your audience to like you, but content marketing nurtures them towards a specific action you want them to take.

Once you've picked your goal, you decide on a strategy that will get you and your business there. And then you start creating the content.

#1 thing robin

Having a strategy in place before you start creating content means you can make sure each post builds off the others, like making strawberry shortcake out of Eggos and whipped cream. You've got to approach your shortcake with strategy (first Eggo, then whipped cream, then strawberries, then another eggo, then more whipped cream, and strawberries on top).

Without strategy, you've just got a pile of Eggos, whipped cream and strawberries all mixed together in a bowl. It'll still be delicious, but it's not strawberry shortcake. (Or in your case, a bunch of blog posts that are totally awesome, but don't work towards your business goals).

(Did no one else's mom make strawberry shortcake like that? Just me? Well it's awesome and you should try it.)

By approaching what you publish strategically, you'll be able to plan out how each piece of content plays off of each other and leads to your goal, so you'll get more shortcake-y bang for your content buck.

It’s all about leading your readers to whatever your end goal is (whether that’s to grow your email list, sell more of your ebook, or increase memberships) in a way that builds their trust in you as a brand.

Here are some ideas of goals that your content marketing could work towards:

Now, once you've planned out your content strategy (I usually do it by quarter), you need to actually take action! It's easiest if you've got a schedule to keep you chugging along and publishing consistently, especially when you're working with a team and need to keep everyone coordinated.
